Hi Barbara, I'm fairly sure the Uchuck leaves Friendly Cove at 3:30pm. ![]() I'm sure you could wade at it at most tides without having to swim. In my old trip report I think I gave the tide height when we crossed it (about an hour or more before low tide) and I don't recall getting wet much above the shins. The tidal lagoon was also no problem - we had been lead to believe it would be way worse than it was. My husband says he doesn't remember being worried about the security of any of the hangs.Īs far as water crossings go, I'm not sure what the other crossings are that you are referring to besides the tidal lagoon - I probably don't remember since we didn't have any problems with them! When we were there Beano Creek had a really big gravel dam across it - the creek was going out through the gravel so there was no stream to cross. The bears were shy and the wolves were curious. ![]() We were more concerned about wolves than bears - we saw only two bears and saw probably two dozen wolves. My husband says he remembers that the hangs were sometimes not proper hangs - they were not really far enough out from the trunk but they were definitely high enough. My memory on hanging food is a little fuzzy. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the food hangs. Unfortunately the tides aren't really working in our favour, the first two will be manageable even if not ideal crossing times, but the one between Maquinna and Yuqot will give us high tide at 9:43am when we need to be at Yuquot around 1pm for to take the Uchuck III back to Gold River. We'll spend two nights at Third Beach, two nights at Calvin Falls, one night at Beano, and one night a bit east of Maquinna Point.Īnd while we're on Nootka, how did you find the water crossings? It looks like there are three key ones that are tide dependent. So, before I take that leap, can you guys provide some more details? How well did you manage to hang your food? Was it just like 12' hangs, or proper hangs with branches that are far enough out from the tree trunks? How much rope did you carry? What was your group size and was there enough space for everyone to hang? Some photos would be ideal. This is really swaying me the other way though. For the last three months as I've been researching Nootka everything pointed towards needing food caches. I think this may make us reconsider how we pack/store food.
